Armed Forces Retirement Home GC Gets Audubon Status

The golf course at the Armed Forces Retirement Home ("AFRH") for enlisted veterans in Washington, D.C. has been designated a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary," the first course to achieve such honor in the nation's capital. The facility is operated by Billy Casper Golf, which assisted in attaining the designation.

In attaining certification from Audubon International, AFRH's nine-hole layout successfully maintains sound environmental practices in six key areas: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction, water conservation, and water quality management.

"Billy Casper Golf and course superintendent Tom Zimmerman put together a superb property-management program that protects the environment and preserves the natural heritage of golf," says Sheila Abarr, Public Affairs Officer at AFRH. "By aggressively and organically caring for the course, residents at AFRH are benefiting from healthier playing experiences."

"There are only about 675 golf courses worldwide with such prestigious 'Sanctuary' status," says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of BCG. "We're proud that AFRH and most Billy Casper Golf courses are among this elite group due to their commitment to ecological impact."

Following the Audubon International-approved steps for an environmentally-friendly golf course reduces waste and promotes efficient operations. An effective program results in a reduction of maintenance costs, including insurance premiums, energy, water, pesticides, fertilizer, equipment wear and labor.

Occupying 272 acres in the heart of Washington, D.C. - minutes from the White House, U.S. Capitol and other national landmarks - AFRH once housed four U.S. presidents, including Abraham Lincoln.

Considered a city within a city, the AFRH campus features everything residents need for daily living: 1,021 private rooms, banks, chapels, a convenience store, Post Office, laundry services, dining room and 24-hour security. Beyond necessities, AFRH offers outstanding social, recreational and occupational activities for every interest. For more information about AFRH visit or call 800/422-9988.
