Crossings at Carlsbad Celebrates First Anniversary

The Crossings at Carlsbad marked its one-year anniversary August 11th. In its first year of operations, the municipal course, located approximately 30 minutes north of downtown San Diego, has served thousands of people and garnered national honors while meeting the city of Carlsbad's goal of acting as a community amenity for golfers and non-golfers.

In the past 12 months, The Crossings has hosted 57,980 rounds, slightly exceeding its initial projection of 56,775 rounds. About 40 percent of the golfers were Carlsbad residents, while roughly 30 percent were from the surrounding San Diego County area.

The facility also has fulfilled the overall vision set by the city for serving the community as part of a broader long-range plan in which the golf course is tied in with other parks and open space developments, such as being a part of Carlsbad's city-wide trail system.

"With all of the major golf manufacturers located here, including Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade/adidas, Ashworth, Fujikura and many others, we view Carlsbad as the golf capital of the world," said Claude A. (Bud) Lewis, mayor of Carlsbad "We are proud that in its inaugural year, The Crossings at Carlsbad is not only representative of who we are as a community, both in the quality of the course and its clubhouse, but also lives up to the area's reputation for golf excellence."

During The Crossings' first year of operation, many milestones have been achieved that will provide a strong foundation for future growth. The course received national acclaim when Golf Magazine named the layout one of its "Top 10 New Courses You Can Play." The course was also featured on The Golf Channel during a piece regarding June's U.S. Open, adding even more national exposure to the facility.

The Crossings has been embraced by the local community as being more than a golf destination, hosting more than 60,000 diners in its first year. As a dining destination, the full-service Canyons Restaurant has had a significant impact on the local community. Averaging 183 customers a day during the first seven months of 2008, the restaurant has exceeded its daily ala carte revenue budget for the first 12 months of operations by more than $400,000. Approximately 90 percent of the restaurant's daily patrons were non-golfers from the local community and surrounding business parks.

Several other community-based milestones have been achieved, including:

In August 2007 the Carlsbad Chamber Annual Golf Tournament became The Crossing's first major golf outing and the first to become an annual recurring event.
In October 2007, The Crossings Club loyalty program was established and has evolved into more than 1,100 members and includes an annual calendar of events.
Community Days were initiated to provide family experiences for the community such as an Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, Valentine's Day Dinner, Fourth of July Family Fun Day Celebration and more.
The Crossings utilizes the City of Carlsbad's Volunteer Program where more than 40 volunteers donate their time to help the course achieve its desired service model.

The Crossings at Carlsbad features an 18-hole, Greg Nash-designed golf course that debuted last August. The layout winds through a coastal terrain that offers views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding shoreline. A 28,000-square-foot clubhouse features a fully stocked golf shop and the Canyons restaurant. The Crossings at Carlsbad also features a large, lighted practice facility in addition to public trails linked to the city's extensive Trail System.
