Els Shows His Design Skills at Whiskey Creek

With Whiskey Creek Golf Club, PGA Tour star Ernie Els tackled his first golf course design with developer and co-designer J. Michael Poellot and Brian Costello of JMP Golf Design Group.

The 18-hole public facility occupies 280 acres and extends 7,000 yards from the tips. There are only 13 homes on the entire site. Most of the course is surrounded with hardwoods, while a winding creek, wetlands, meadows and rock outcroppings also inhabit the site. In the spirit of Els’ preference for classic courses, the holes challenge a golfer’s shot-making ability. Wide fairways and multiple sets of tees take the sting out of the course for higher handicappers, so anyone should feel comfortable playing this track.

The 9,500-square-foot clubhouse is a Sam Dunn design, complete with shaker shingles on the roof and sides, wrap-around porches and a stone fireplace. The structure’s amenities include comfortable leather furnishings and a private meeting room on the second floor with a spectacular view of the ninth hole.

Whiskey Creek opened in June 2000, and is operated by Kemper Sports Management of Northbrook, Ill. Whiskey Creek is in Ijamsville, between Urbania and Monrovia on Maryland State Highway 80, 35 miles from Washington D.C. To book a tee time at Whiskey Creek, call 888-883-1174 or 301-694-2900.
