Golf Project Brightens Future for Maryland Community
Leonardtown has been looking for ways to attract development to its area over the past few years, and it seems a solution has been found. Both St. Marys County and the state are investing in a golf course, hotel and conference center. Work on the project is slated to begin at the end of this year. Also planned are 592 homes around the site. The county and state hope private investors will help finance the projectís $60 million price tag.
The golf course will cost $13 million, $1.5 million of which the county is contributing. The state is chipping in another $2.5 million, not including its purchase of the courseís 238-acre site. All parties expect to recoup their investments from future course revenues.
The course should be ready to play by 2003, according to state officials. The state hopes to utilize Leonardtown Recreation Inc., a nonprofit entity established in 1997, to oversee development of the project.
