Grande Dunes Members Club Ready to Debut

The private Grande Dunes Members Club golf course and its 27,000-square-foot clubhouse officially opens to members on June 4, 2005. The golf course, co-designed by PGA Tour player Nick Price and architect Craig Schreiner, is the only Nick Price course along the coasts of North or South Carolina. Part of the upscale residential Grande Dunes resort in Myrtle Beach, S. C., the layout features impeccable conditioning and outstanding member services.

Price was in Myrtle Beach on June 3rd to play his first round on the course. Price, who said he's played the course mentally about “a thousand times,” shot a 66 from the tips, hitting 14 fairways and all 18 greens. His low round establishes the new course record – one that may stand for some time.

“Nick Price and Craig Schreiner have created a true members club golf course,” said the club’s general manager, Mike Buccerone. “The course is skillfully crafted to provide an interesting variety of challenges while, at the same time, allowing it to reward members who play it frequently and can learn how to best manage its rolling fairways and subtle, sloping greens.”

The Members Club at Grande Dunes is one of two championship layouts at Grande Dunes, a multi-billion dollar, master-planned community encompassing 2,200 acres of prime coastal real estate. A limited number of home sites – all with significant setbacks – will be available at The Members Club. The gated community will contain just 176 home sites near eight holes on the front nine, with another 50 plats along the Intracoastal Waterway. In addition, cottages are planned along the 9th and 18th holes.

About The Course

The course features wide, generous fairways. The front nine is a classic parkland-style with tree-lined fairways, while the back side offers a combination of links and parkland characteristics. Many holes are sculpted to create a natural feel, keeping with the architects’ philosophy of “least disturbance.”

The yardage for the par-71 track ranges from 5,000 to 7,048 yards. It boasts L93 bentgrass greens, TifSport Bermuda tees and fairways, 419 Bermuda rough, and Zoysia grass around the bunkers.

“Our club has a very distinctive look and feel,“ notes Buccerone. “We cross-cut the tees just like many of the greatest golf venues. Our bunkers are filled with pearl-white Felspar quartz sand – the same sand used at Augusta National. Our practice facility – which includes two large putting greens, as well as chipping and bunker areas – has a practice range designed and groomed to resemble actual playing conditions. When they play, our members and their guests will have the option of riding in a golf car, walking and carrying their own bags, or using our caddie program which offers both full-service caddies and forecaddies.”

About The Clubhouse

The Italianate clubhouse at The Members Club contains a large veranda overlooking the 9th and 18th greens, as well as a lake with three individual islands landscaped with native plants and trees. It houses a full-service golf shop, a “turn-house” bistro, casual grill, full-service dining room, a members’ library with a full bar and fireplace, and board rooms.

“We intend to provide our members and their guests with world-class service and the clubhouse is a big part of that,” says Buccerone. “Valet parking is provided. Our locker room amenities include showers and lounge areas for both men and women, as well as locker room attendants. And when a member brings a guest, we’ll provide the guest with a ‘daily’ locker.”
