Legacy Golf Club Earns Raves
Beating nature's tornado season to the punch, The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk, Iowa, has taken the area by storm. "The tee times have been full since we opened, May 31," said owner Matt Manning. "It's amazing. We had two big outings this week. Today it's full. This weekend is full. It's like the saying, 'Build it and they will come.' They came."
The course, designed by Jeffrey D. Brauer of Arlington, Texas, is winning golfers' votes as the best value in the area, said Manning, who added: "Listening to the public for the last 14 days, they think it's a wonderful layout. Fifty percent say they haven't played a course they like as well as this one. There are golfers here playing for the seventh and eighth times and we're only open for 14 days."
The upscale public course is the centerpiece of The Legacy Golf Club Community, a new mixed-use development being built by Hubbell Realty Co. only five minutes from Des Moines International Airport. The existing 300-acre Colonial Meadows development, owned by the M.W. Ghrist family, was added to a 250-acre property to create The Legacy, which is situated on Lexington Drive.
According to Rick Tollakson, a senior vice president of Hubbell Realty Company, the infrastructure is finished for 60 lots of single-family dwellings in Phase One. Two townhome developments that will bring more than 100 units to the project will begin in July. More than 410 single-family and 145 townhome lots are projected.
There are more than 17 families currently living in the development, with 12 new homes under construction. Meanwhile, construction could begin as early as this fall on a new retail development and a neighborhood center with an outdoor swimming pool.
"We are getting wonderful feedback on the golf course and the homes, and now that people have product to see, we anticipate sales to pick up greatly," said marketing director Kelly Sharp.
Tollakson expects The Legacy to spark growth in Norwalk, saying that the new Highway 5, opening this fall, will create easy access to downtown and the employment and retail centers of the western suburbs. He said the developers saw a void in golf in the western suburbs and The Legacy will fill it. For more information or a tee time, call 515-287-7885
