Lewis Jumps to Lead in Dunhill Links Championship; Uihlein Fires 60 at Kingsbarns
England's Tom Lewis shot a 7-under 65 at St. Andrews Old Course to forge a one-stroke lead through 36 holes of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
Over the first three rounds the 72-hole European Tour event rotates between three courses - the Old Course, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns, with Sunday's final round at the Old Course.
Lewis shared the first-round lead with Mark Tullo, Alexandre Kaleka, Oliver Wilson and Richard McEvoy after each opened with 64s, with Lewis's coming at Kingsbarns.
On Friday, Lewis posted four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back to reach 15-under 129, a stroke ahead of Dutchman Juist Looten - who had a 9-under 63 at Kingsbarns, and two over McEvoy (67 at Carnoustie), Hennie Otto (63 at Old Course), Tommy Fleetwood (66 at Carnoustie), Mark Foster (66 at Old Course) and Wilson (67 at Old Course).
The round of the day was carded by American Peter Uihlein, who fired a 12-under 60 at Kingsbarns. Uihlein, a regular on the European Tour who won in May in Portugal, posted eight birdies and two eagles, with the latter two both coming on par-5s.
Uihlein could have been the first player in European Tour history to shoot 59 but narrowly missed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. After opening with a 71 at Carnoustie, his 60 moved the 24-year-old Massachusetts native and 2010 U.S. Amateur champion into a tie for third at 131.
Tullo dropped down the leaderboard after a 78 at Carnoustie, while Kaleka had a 70 at Carnoustie for a share of 13th at 10-under 134.
