Los Cabos Continues to Add New Courses
As Mexico's golf mecca, Los Cabos is home to growing collection of golf courses designed by such notables as Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Pete Dye.
With the opening of the Diamante Cabo San Lucas course in December and with several others in various stages of development, Los Cabos continues to emerge as one of the world's premiere golf destinations. In a reader's poll published in the June 2010 issue of Conde Nast Traveler, two Los Cabos resorts were voted as part of the "Top-80 Best Golf Resorts" in the world. Esperanza Resort and the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort were among the Top-10 Foreign Golf Resorts, voted Nos. 1 and 8 on the list, respectively.
Here are the newest courses that have opened over the past year or are now in development:
Diamante Cabo San Lucas
The Dunes Course at Diamante Cabo San Lucas was designed by 20-time PGA Tour winner Davis Love III. The beachfront track boasts dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean and is complemented by a unique practice facility that offers four separate hitting caves and two driving ranges. Phil Mickelson has been tapped to design the development's second layout, the Oasis Course, with a construction start date to be determined. For more information, visit www.diamantecabosanlucas.com.
Cabo Riviera Marina
This 18-hole Pete Dye Signature Golf Course has an option to add an additional nine holes at its locale within a new waterfront community. Scheduled for completion in late 2012, the Cabo Riviera Marina is suitable for seasoned pros as well as higher handicappers. For more information, visit www.caboriviera.com.mx.
Puerto Los Cabos
Puerto Los Cabos
Set along the beaches of San Jose del Cabo, this destination opened with 18 holes: the nine-hole Marina Course designed by Jack Nicklaus and the nine-hole Mission Course by Greg Norman. The courses are open 365 days a year to both public and private play. Another 18 holes are currently under development; when completed the Nicklaus course will be opened to the public while the full Norman track will be private. Quivira Los Cabos
The two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses at Quivira Los Cabos feature a backdrop along one of Mexico's most dramatic stretches of oceanfront property. Construction is set to begin in mid-2010 on the first 18, with its completion slated for early 2012. The second phase will break ground in 2012, with 18 holes of that development to debut in late 2013. Set along massive sand dunes, rugged cliffs and white-sand beaches, one of the layouts will be private while the other can be accessed by resort guests.
