Lyman Orchards' Jones Course Reopens

Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, Conn., reopened its Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course on May 23, after six-month, $2-million renovation.

The remodel - crafted by the Lyman family, course operator Billy Casper Golf and architect Mark Mungeam of Mungeam Cornish Golf Design - involved replacing the irrigation system, renovating existing bunkers, adding new bunkers, improving drainage and creating better sight-lines for golfers.

Another focus was maintaining trees bordering fairways and framing greens to improve turf quality. The extensive pruning and underbrush removal was the most recent major work to take place before the course's reopening.

The scope of work - including installing a multi-row irrigation system with a more efficient pump station to reduce water usage - is a step toward Lyman Orchards qualifying for the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary program. Following Audubon-approved steps for an environmentally-friendly golf course protects the wildlife habitat while reducing the use of energy, water, pesticides and fertilizer.

The par-72, 7,011-yard Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course, opened in 1969, meanders through woodlands, wetlands and grasslands. The Jones Course offers four sets of tees on each hole and its 50-plus bunkers will challenge golfers of all abilities. On the back nine, water comes into play on seven holes.

In 1994, PGA Hall of Fame golfer and course designer Gary Player opened Lyman Orchards' second course, a par-71, 6,725-yard layout. The Player Course is sprinkled with deciduous trees and white pines. The routing takes players through apple orchards and features ample elevation changes. On holes No. 11 and 13, golfers are treated to 360-degree views of southern Connecticut's landscape.

The two courses are set within the 1,100-acre Lyman Orchards, a fruit-growing operation at 32 Reeds Gap Road that dates back to 1741. On-site facilities include the Apple Barrel market, filled with fresh farm produce and Lyman Orchard's award-winning "Hi Top" Apple Pie; a special-events facility at Lyman Homestead; "U-pick" orchards; and the Lyman Orchard's Golf Academy.
