Neighbors Sound Off Against North Stonington Project
In a February 2001 public meeting, a neighbor of a proposed 36-hole golf facility urged town officials to “really consider the magnitude of this project” and to make sure that there would be “no unreasonable destruction to the area.” Jason Westcott, a spokesman for the Stonington Institute, voiced these concerns during a North Stonington Planning and Zoning hearing about the Phelps Brook Development’s proposal. Westcott echoed the concerns of other attendees who want additional time to review the applicant’s information.
The project proponents are two local families who hope to build the two courses on a site off Swantown Hill Road. The institute threw up its red flags after receiving a request from the developer that it test a well on the property.
Most of the concerns expressed during the public hearing had to do with water issues. Some residents said there were too many loopholes in the application and too many unanswered questions. A nearby property owner also fears that the courses would have deleterious effects on Lantern Brook, a stream which flows through the northern section of the proposed site.
