New Course in Massachusetts Set for April Debut

New England golfers will welcome the start of the 2010 season with a mid-April grand opening of a new semiprivate facility. Shining Rock Golf Club in Northbridge, Mass., has been evolving and maturing over the past four years and a new ownership team is confident that the golfing experience will rival that of any course in the state.

Carved out of a 146-acre tract of rolling landscape that offers views of the historic Blackstone Valley Corridor, Shining Rock is a par-72 track that measures 6,735 yards from the tips. The back or silver tees carry a 139 slope and 74.1 rating, making the layout of the toughest tests in the state for a public-access facility.

With an elevation change of 255 feet, the course offers some stunning holes. All 18 holes have been named and many reflect the area's cultural and industrial heritage, with designations such as "Kuttutuck," "Blackstone," "Quarry," "Rockdale," "Pemaogok," "Towpath" and "Shining Path."

The namesake Shining Rock is a sheer granite cliff that sits prominently almost 80 feet above the forest floor below and offers 30-mile-wide vistas into Rhode Island and central Massachusetts. The abundance of mica found in the glacial rock causes the formation to glisten in the sunshine after a rain and was a landmark for early settlers to the Blackstone Valley.

"Shining Rock will offer attractive playing privilege packages and daily fees to area golfers that are competitively priced," said club spokesman Tim Gordon. "Our goal next year is to accommodate a significant number of players, as we believe we have a very special golf course that should prove to be exceptionally popular with New England golfers.

"Comments from knowledgeable players who already have previewed Shining Rock are that they think they are playing a course designed by a major golf architect. We are proud that the construction site superintendent, Patrick Sullivan, who for four years directed much of the design and construction, has guided Shining Rock through its extraordinary development and the result is a spellbinding layout."

The public can make tee times online at or by calling 508/234-0400 starting March 15th. Members of Hopkinton Country Club will enjoy playing privileges at Shining Rock. For more information, call Gordon at 508/735-7540.
