New Golf Center Planned at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
Construction is set to start in April on the Golf Center at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Conn. The new facility at Lyman Orchards Golf Club will be located adjacent to the historic Apple Barrel market.
Developed by the Lyman family and Billy Casper Golf, and designed by Mark Mungeam of Mungeam Cornish Golf Design, the project calls for a new nine-hole executive layout, the only new golf course slated to be built this year in Connecticut. The par-29 layout will measure 1,600 yards and contain bentgrass greens built to USGA specifications. Holes will range in length from 115 and 315 yards.
Also planned is a 40-stall grass and artificial turf driving range with target greens and bunkers, a short-game practice area and a 2,000-square-foot clubhouse. The Golf Center at Lyman Orchards is scheduled to open in late spring 2012.
"The Golf Center reinforces the Lyman family's forward-thinking commitment to promote the game of golf and attract a new and broader demographic," says Steve Ciskowski, President and CEO of Lyman Farms, Inc. "This crossover facility will complement our two existing courses and represents a bold advance, distancing Lyman Orchards from the current landscape."
Lyman Orchards Golf Club currently features 36 eco-friendly holes. The facility has been designated a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" by Audubon International for its high standards protecting the environment and preserving the natural heritage of golf. Following Audubon-approved steps protects the wildlife habitat while reducing the use of energy, water, pesticides and fertilizer.
The first course built at Lyman Orchards is a par-72, 7,011-yard track designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and opened in 1969. Later undergoing a major renovation in 2009, the Jones Course meanders through woodlands, wetlands and meadows, offering four tees a hole and more than 50 bunkers. On the back nine, water enters play on seven holes.
In 1994, Golf Hall of Fame member Gary Player designed Lyman Orchards' second course, a par-71, 6,725-yard gem. The Player Course contains deciduous trees and classic white pines and is routed through apple orchards. Featuring ample elevation changes throughout, the layout offers panoramas of southern Connecticut at Nos. 11 and 13.
