New Jersey’s Sea Oaks Golf Club
Sea Oaks Golf Club in Little Egg Harbor Township is a high-end public course along the New Jersey shore. Other neighboring top-flight facilities on the southern tip of Ocean County are Blue Heron Pines, Cape May National, Harbor Pines, Seaview Marriott Resort and Sand Barrens.
The grand opening of Sea Oaks last July fulfilled the dream of owner and developer, Fred Stryker, whose vision was to build a first-class golf course everyone could enjoy. Tragically, Stryker was unable to experience the course’s opening as, just two months before Sea Oaks’ debut, he was killed in a two-car accident. Fred’s son, Robert Stryker, and his family were able to manage their grief and finish the project.
Designed by Raymond Hearn, Sea Oaks was built on a 194-acre parcel containing two hills and five holes with considerable elevation change. The course plays from 5,150 to 6,950 yards – an appealing characteristic for both high and low handicappers. The layout boasts contoured fairways lined by oak and pine. Several man-made water hazards and dozens of sand bunkers enter play to make the par-72 track a constant challenge. From the course’s higher points, views of the Atlantic Ocean, Long Beach Island and Atlantic City skyline are on tap.
The course lies just minutes from Garden State Parkway exit 58. In spring 2001 golfers will enjoy after-round entertainment – and Atlantic panoramas – in a new two-story, 17,500-foot clubhouse. The structure contains dining, banquet and special-event facilities as well as a pro shop and locker rooms.
Fred Stryker was a man of vision, and the golfing grounds he built on New Jersey’s shore will be enjoyed by generations to come. To book a tee time at this up-and-coming course, call 609/296-2656.
