Nicklaus Christens Sagamore

On August 19, 2003, Jack Nicklaus christened his new signature course at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. The layout will be the focal point of a new residential community near Indianapolis. The “Golden Bear,” the winner of 18 major championships, has designed more than 200 golf courses around the world.

The grand opening, called “A Walk with Jack,” marked the official debut of the club, which is operated by Troon Golf. Members and guests accompanied Jack while he played the 7,173-yard course from the tips. As is his custom, Nicklaus conducted a “tour” of the course, identifying the features that defined the shape and strategy of each hole while offering advice on course management. He was genuinely impressed with Sagamore’s greens, saying, “I know a lot of courses that would die for greens like these, I don’t know of any that wouldn’t.”

Sagamore may herald a new era for one of golf’s most prolific designers. Fans of golf course architecture often cite Nicklaus’ Midwestern golf courses as the best examples of his design talent. Sagamore certainly fits this bill, with its rolling terrain, lakes, woods, and streams well-suited for the variety of holes needed to host major events – while providing members an ever-challenging place to play.

“Troon Golf is extremely honored to be associated with a golf club so dedicated to preserving the great traditions of the game for future generations,” stated Troon Golf CEO, Dana Garmany. “I speak for all our Troon Golf associates at The Sagamore Club when I say we take great pride in offering its members a new premiere-level club experience that elevates golf in this area to a breathtaking level.”

Troon Golf is adding Sagamore to its portfolio of Private Clubs of Distinction. Among the companies many prestigious properties are The Westin Turnberry Resort, Ayrshire, Scotland; The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, Scottsdale, Ariz.; The Crosby Club, San Diego, Calif.; The Ridge at Castle Pines North, Castle Rock, Colo.; Huntingdale Golf Club, Victoria, Australia; and The Grove, London, England.
