Once Again, Bavarian Hills Gets State Grant Money

Thanks to a state grant endorsed by Governor Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, the 18-hole Bavarian Hills Golf Course in St. Marys is getting an additional nine holes as well as a newly-paved parking lot and 70 acres for future development. The golf course may eventually contain 36 holes. Work is continuing on the new nine holes, which should be ready for play in summer 2001.

Bavarian Hills was eligible for the so-called Growing Greener Grant because the course became an authority created by the Benzinger Township when it merged with nearby St. Marys. Governor Ridge approved the grant based on this qualification, authorizing the state to give Bavarian Hills $123,600 for the expansion.

This isnít the first time the course has received state grant money. In 1987 it received $343,502 to be developed. Construction began a year after that grant was issued, and Bavarian Hills opened for play in 1990. The original, 5,986-yard 18 was designed by Bill Love and Brian Ault.
