Pan Wins The Prestige at PGA West; Oregon Takes Team Title
In only his second collegiate tournament, Cheng-Tsung Pan, a freshman at the University of Washington, overcame a top field at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., by firing a 7-under 65 in Tuesday's final round to win The Prestige.
Pan finished at 15-under 201 to beat 2010 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year Eugene Wong of Oregon. Todd Baek of San Diego State and Alex Ching of San Diego tied for third at -10.
Despite Pan's great play, the Huskies came up just short of catching Oregon, which won the team title by two strokes. Oregon shot 5-under par over the final three holes to eclipse the Huskies, who went 1-under over the same stretch.
Top-ranked Stanford finished third behind Washington, eight shots back of the No. 2-ranked Ducks, who ended up at 32-under 832 on the Greg Norman course thanks to an 8-under 280 total on the final day.
Pan carded rounds of 69-67-65, and had only two bogeys over 54 holes. Pan's teammates, Charlie Hughes and No. 4-ranked Chris Williams - a member of the 2011 Walker Cup team, each shot 5-under.
