Prestonburg’s Mountaintop Course Open

Construction has finished up on a 275-acre golf project in Prestonburg, Kentucky. The grand opening of Mountaintop Golf Course was held in May 1 2001.

The Chris Chrisman-designed course atop Mays Branch Mountain was once the site of a strip mine. In fact, $2.2 million in funds for the new course were secured from royalties earned by the mined coal. The rest of the financing was provided by state grants. Chrisman enlisted PGA Tour pro Russ Cochran to help with the design of the links-style track, which is characterized by mound-lined fairways and dozens of bunkers.

Opening with the course was a 2,000-square-foot clubhouse with a snack bar and a 100-seat dining area. The clubhouse features wood and natural stone construction. Also on site is a full-service practice range with a large practice green. Eventually, the Mountaintop facility will be adjoined by recreational facilities – a baseball diamond for the local high school team and a girls’ softball field – and 109 single-family lots.
