The Stone Canyon Club

“Stone Canyon is the best desert course I’ve ever designed,” said Jay Morrish, the architect for the Stone Canyon Club in Arizona. That’s a quite a statement for the esteemed designer, whose seven other Arizona courses include such fine venues as the Boulders in Carefree, Troon North in Scottsdale, TPC Scottsdale, Rim Golf Club in Payson, Forest Highlands in Flagstaff, the Foothills in Phoenix, and Troon Golf & Country Club in Scottsdale. Most of these highly regarded courses are in Marcopa County.

But Stone Canyon, the 50th course Morrish has designed, is in Oro Valley, just north of Tucson. The private Stone Canyon Club lies in a 1,400-acre master-planned community between the Santa Catalina and Tortolita mountains. The facility, still in the development stages, includes hundreds of homesites ranging in price from $200,000 to $600,000. Non-golf amenities include fine-dining as well as exercise, tennis and swimming facilities.

Morrish was dumbstruck when he first saw the property for the future golf course. “I was overwhelmed when I saw this site. I have been involved in (several) desert golf courses. It is by far the best desert golf course site I have ever seen. Period. It is the best.” Morrish was instructed by the developer – Stone Canyon Properties, Inc. – to optimize the site for golf. “Basically, the instructions were to get the most out of the piece of property. It should be something we would all be proud of. And, since it is such a marvelous piece of property (that mission) was very easy to do.” Among the more interesting features of the land is its spectacular rock formations, trees, giant saguaros and palo verdes. There are also considerably more changes in elevations more than a typical desert course, thus allowing sweeping vistas in every direction from the golf course.
