Thornton Wins Oregon Open

Brian Thornton of Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent, Wash., carded a bogey-free, seven-birdie 65 to win the Oregon Open Invitational by two shots over Corey Prugh (69) of Manito Golf & Country Club in Spokane. The $70,000 event took place at the 6,922-yard Broken Top Club in Bend.

Thornton finished the 54-hole tournament at 12-under 204 en route to adding the Oregon Open title to earlier wins in the Washington Open and Northwest Open. He earned $7,000 for this latest victory.

Scott Erdmann (69) of Oswego Lake Country Club ended up in third at 207, while right behind at 208 was Darren Black (70) of Rainier Golf & Country Club in Seattle. First-round leader Jeff Coston (71) of Semiahmoo G&CC in Blaine, Wash., took solo fifth at 209.

After making the final-round cut right on the number, Chris Van der Velde of Tetherow Golf Club in Bend fired a course-record 63 thanks to nine birdies. Van der Velde passed 61 players to finish tied for 11th.

Defending champion Reid Martin (71) of Lake Padden Golf Club in Bellingham, Wash., took home low-amateur honors at 3-under 213.

The Kids Center of Bend was the beneficiary of the championship.
