Upgrades Announced for the Grand Golf Club In Del Mar

Manchester Grand Resorts has announced that more than $1 million in improvements will soon be completed at The Grand Golf Club. The highlight of the project was a redesign of the 16th hole. The Grand Golf Club is San Diego County's only course designed by architect Tom Fazio.

Under Fazio's direction, the changes to the 16th involved turning the original par-4 into a par-5 by adding another 110 yards. The new green features bunkers on the left and right at a higher elevation, with the water hazard behind the green now coming into play. The club’s upgrades also include a new 50,000-square-foot clubhouse slated to open in June 2006.

"It was our intention, with the help of the Fazio design team, to create a more challenging hole, creating a high risk-reward decision for the player as he concludes his round," said Herb Moore, director of golf.

Within the 380-acre resort is 24 acres that will contain The Grand Del Mar, a 261-room luxury resort hotel adjoined by a full-service spa and 39, 4,000-square-foot residential ownership villas nestled into the rolling hills and coastal canyons around the course in Del Mar, Calif.

Building designs will honor the architectural traditions from the early 1900's, including architect Addison Mizner (1872-1933), whose sun-washed style launched the "Florida Renaissance" and helped define resort communities of Palm Beach and Boca Raton, Fla. The style is inspired by the decorative arts of Mediterranean Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Located 20 miles north of San Diego International Airport, The Grand Del Mar Resort & Spa and The Grand Golf Club are situated within the La Jolla-Rancho Santa Fe-Del Mar triangle, an area that enjoys an average of over 300 days of sunshine a year.
