Western Intercollegiate Set for Mid-April

The Western Intercollegiate will be held April 15-17, 2011 at the Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif.

According to San Jose State University men's golf coach John Kennaday, the 2011 Western Intercollegiate has attracted several high-profile teams, including the Augusta State Jaguars, the defending NCAA Division I champion. Oregon also returns with hopes of winning a third consecutive Western Intercollegiate team title.

Arizona State, San Diego State, Stanford, Cal, UCLA, Southern California and Washington are currently ranked in the top-25 and are entered in the 15-team field.

Host San Jose State, New Mexico State and UC Irvine are three top-100 nationally-ranked squads that will be on hand, joining Colorado, Denver and Hawaii to round out one of the top spring tournaments in men's college golf.

The Western Intercollegiate, one of the longest-running collegiate competitions in the nation, is held at a venue ranked among the nation's best by GolfWeek, Golf Magazine and the Zagat Survey. The course recently underwent a meticulous renovation by Tom Doak that restored MacKenzie's original design elements.

"Friday's practice round and college-am present an excellent opportunity for amateur golfers to tee it up with talented collegiate players on one of the world's finest courses," states Coach Kennaday. "It's also an ideal venue for alumni and business community leaders to gather in support of collegiate golf."

Golf fans are invited to be in the gallery for the 54-hole Western Intercollegiate and follow their favorite five-man teams.

Over the years, several noted future pros claimed the title to "The Western," including Bobby Clampett, Peter Jacobson, Mark Lye, Johnny Miller, Arron Oberholser, Mark O'Meara and Ken Venturi.
