Ziegler Wins PNGA Women's Amateur

Aaren Ziegler of Canby, Ore. captured the 110th Pacific Northwest Women's Amateur Championship at Port Ludlow Golf Club in Port Ludlow, Wash. Ziegler, a University of Wisconsin Women's team recruit, defeated Philippine National Team member, Lovelynn Guioguio of Lipa City, Batangas, Philippines, 5 and 4 in the 36-hole match.

Ziegler went 1-down on the second hole of the final match but quickly got back to all-square with a birdie on the par 3, third. She would gain a 2-up advantage by the ninth, and after winning hole Nos. 11, 12 and 13, Ziegler had a commanding 5-up lead at the end of the morning round.

The match continued in the afternoon with Guioguio inching back, winning the 23rd and 28th holes to get to 3-down, but Ziegler regained control by winning the 29th and 31st holes with pars to go 5-up with five holes to play. In true championship form, Ziegler hit the flag on the par 3, 32nd hole, her ball stopping 10 feet from the hole and ending the match 5 and 4.

When asked what this win means to her, Ziegler said, "This is my first women's event after turning 18, so it's special. This was a great course for me because it was a lot like the course I play at home."

Turbide Wins PNGA Women's Mid-Am

In the Women's Mid-Amateur Championship Match, Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C., successfully defended her title by defeating 2005 and '07 Women's Mid-Am champion Kareen Markle of Meridian, Idaho, 2 and 1. Turbide won the event last year at Clarkston (Wash.) Country Club.

Turbide birdied the first hole to quickly go 1-up, and started to put the pressure on by building a 3-up lead through seven holes. Markle fought back into the match over the next seven holes to square it through 14. Turbide quickly regained the lead on the 15th and a wayward shot by Markle into the lateral hazard on 16 put Turbide dormie heading to the 17th tee. With a routine par on the downhill par-3, Turbide captured her second consecutive PNGA Women's Mid-Amateur title.
